- Gutters and downspouts must be in working order, and must carry the water out away from the foundation.
- The grade of the yard must be sloped down away from the foundation.
- Cracks in the foundation (determined by the existence of any signs of water such as seepage, mold, efflorescence, dampness, etc.) need to be dug down from the outside and sealed.
- If water is seeping in at the base of the wall, drains (running to a sump pump system) need to be repaired, or installed, under the basement floor. Undermined areas should be packed with gravel.
- Basement windows should be caulked (or replaced if rotted).
